2007 11E Section 2 State Semi-Finals: Atlantic City @ Superior

To make these games fair, we play them with even teams so that it's a possibility that we're able to be upset if the conditions are right.

They struck first in the 1st quarter, scoring after a short punt by us gave them excellent field position. But we struck back to tie up at 7-7, following an 84-yard TD reception.

In the 2nd quarter, Superior responded to go up 14-7, but with time winding down in the 2nd Q, the 49ers kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 14-10. AC gets the ball back in the 2nd half and a failed 4th down conversion gave the Superior squad the ball back and they went up 21-10 as a result. The 49ers of Atlantic City answer back to bring the game within 5 after a failed two-pt conversion and with 1:08 left in the 4th quarter after a strong defensive stand by the Atlantic City defense, our final drive had us down 16-21.

We have no timeouts and have to get downfield to win, as a field goal will not do. Facing a 4th and 11 situation, our QB Kalvin Long gets us to the 24-yard line of Superior, but does so in the middle of the field. He has to immediately get to the line, throws an incomplete pass and that leaves him with 3 downs and 10 seconds on the clock to get into the end zone.

On 3rd and 11 with :07 seconds left, Dachsle throws a spiral on a play they call "Deep Dish Special" where receivers run decoy routes before all ending up essentially boxing out the defenders creating a mismatch. This is what happened here and waiting to catch the pass was Kevin Novak to score the touchdown with just 2 seconds left.

After the extra point, the score is 23-21. The squib kick was successful and the Superior returner bobbles it, preventing a runback and in exciting fashion, the 49ers will advance to the Sectional Finals.

Kalvin Long was 12-27 for 290 yards and 3 TDs.
